Joseph Schmidt (born 4 March 1904 in Dawideny, Austrian Crownland of Bukovina; died 16 November 1942 in the internment camp Girenbad above Hinwil, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland) was an Austrian operatic singer (lyric tenor). Around 1930, he was one of the most well-known and popular German-speaking singers. After fleeing the German Reich in 1933 because he was Jewish, he eventually reached Switzerland by indirect routes, where he soon fell ill in an internment camp. Shortly after inadequate treatment in a Zurich hospital, Schmidt died of heart failure.
